Montevallo - Funeral services for Jewell Rich Burgess, 90, will be Thursday, March 10, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center Chapel with the Rev. Robin Norsworthy officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 5-7 p.m. Mrs. Burgess died Friday, March 4, 2011 at Shelby Ridge Nursing Home.
She is survived by a daughter, Tina Diane Burgess Walters; a granddaughter, Christina Jewell Walters; several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be her nephews.
Mrs. Burgess was born near Jacksonville, Alabama on June 14, 1920 to William Smith Rich and Fannie Heathcock Rich.
Her father died four months before she was born, and her Uncle Henry and Aunt Fannie ("Nanna") Heathcock helped raise her and her two older brothers, Howard and John Thomas.
At age 14 she accepted Jesus Christ as her savior, committed her life to Him, and was baptized in a creek near Jacksonville. On March 23, 1940 she married William Zelton ("Mr. Z") Burgess, who preceded her in death in 1989.
Early in the 1950's she and her husband moved to Calera, where he was employed by Abex. Later, she worked at Shelby Hospital as switchboard operator and mail deliverer. A year or two after moving to Calera, the family relocated and became permanent residents of Montevallo.
Mrs. Burgess graduated from Alexandria High School. She was known as Nana to her granddaughter and loved pet Pugsi.
