Mrs. Winnie Mae Grimes, a devoted Christian who spent much of her time in service to others, passed away Saturday, Jan.17, 2004, at the University of Alabama Hospital, Birmingham, after a brief illness.She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.Mrs. Grimes, 71, of Florence, had been the owner and operator of Merle Norman Cosmetics in north Florence for the past 17 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Florence. She was very active in its ministries and was passionate about services for the homebound.She was preceded in death by her parents, John L. Rich and Winnie Rich, Collinwood, Tenn.; brothers, Granville Rich, Raymond Rich and Gaynes Rich, Wayne County, Tenn.; and sister, Hazel Holt, of Florence.The funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Florence, with the Rev. Gary Formby, the Rev. Leonard McDowell and the Rev. Jeff Davis officiating. The casket will lie in state at the church for one hour before the service. Burial will follow in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Elkins Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. today.Mrs. Grimes is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Fred Hunter Grimes; sons, Capt. Michael K. Grimes and wife, Karen, Montclair, Va., Phillip A. Grimes and wife, Roxane, Florence; grandchildren, Becky and Suzanne Grimes, Montclair, Va., and Robin and Patrick Grimes, Florence; sisters, Genevie Horton, Florence, Ocie Richerson, Waynesboro, Tenn.; brothers, Ralph Rich and J.W. Rich, Collinwood, Tenn., and Norman Rich, Muscle Shoals; many nieces and nephews.Pallbearers will be Al Ford, Mike O'Steen, Jim McKee, David Ferguson, Bob Zettle and Joe Dill.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the congregational care ministry at First United Methodist Church.
