Mrs. Mary Edna Rice Bates of 8028 Taylor Piedmont Road, passed December 24, 2007. She was the widower of Mr. Otis Bates. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Prease Rice and Mrs. Johnnie Bell Bobo Rice. She was a native of Greenville County and attended The Place of Peace Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Mr. Leon Rice of Spartanburg; two brothers, Mr. Marvin Rice and Mr. Michael Rice both of Greer; eight sisters, Ms. Wilma Culbertson, Ms. Yolanda Rice, Ms. Vanessa Rice, Ms. Crystal Rice, Ms. Barbara Rice, and Ms. Kelly R. Williams, all of Greer, Ms. Aninece Blackmond of Detroit MI, Ms. Grace Walton of Dayton, OH; five grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Ms. Gailya Bates Thomason and Mrs Lillian Bates Martin.

The funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 30, 2007 at the Monks Grove Baptist Church. Rev. D. R. Durham will officiate. Burial will be in the Upper Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family is at the home.
