James Calvin Rice was born July 17, 1931 in Alco, Arkansas to Odis and Bertha Rice. Odis was the son of Gordon Lloyd Napoleon Posey and Dovey Lee Rice. Bertha was the daughter of Thomas Edward and Rosa California Ward. He was known to his friends as Jim or JC.
Jim attended Alco School and the Mountain View School where he graduated in 1949. He joined the Air Force in 1950 with his cousin Archie Lawrence in what was then called the buddy system and served 21 years. In his early career he served in Ketlivek, Iceland and Jaego, Korea. He worked at the Pentagon with a security clearance, AIC. He served as Chief of Air Force Intelligence Center at Arlington Hall in Virginia. He was stationed at South Ryeslip, AFB in London, England, serving as Base Sergeant Major and was in charge of the postal and courier operations for the Air Force. He next was stationed in Tehran, Iran running the APO and courier service. When he returned to the states he served as Base Sergeant Major at Amarillo AFB, Texas and the Mather AFB in Sacramento, California. He retuned for another tour in Jaego, Korea and spent his last year as Base Sergeant Major at Little Rock AFB, Jacksonville, Arkansas. He retired in Jan of 1971 at the rank of Master Sergeant.
After retiring Jim retuned home to Stone County. He obtained his broker's license in real estate and served with several companies throughout his career in real estate. He was very active in the community. Jim was the cartoonist of ĎAnti' for the Newspaper "The Mountain View". He ran for mayor in the late 70's and lost by only a few votes. He served on the Mountain View Water Commission, and the Planning and Zoning committee. He was a Life Time member of the DAV, Amvets, American Legion, and VFW he served as Commander, Finance Officer, Chaplain, and Bingo Chairman.
The last several years of his life he was plagued by many health issues including heart problems. He was a 13 year survivor of pancreatic cancer which is almost unheard of. He will be remembered as a mover and shaker, artist, organizer and a friend.
He is survived by his wife May Rice of Rosie, Arkansas, his sister Helen Parsons of Mountain View, Arkansas, tow daughters, Cindy Rice-Hanlin of Mountain View and Michelle Lancaster of Alco, two stepsons, Michael Hooper of Batesville Arkansas and Randall Hooper of Rosie, Arkansas. He has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Roller Crouch Chapel, Mtn. View with interment of his remains in Alco Cemetery, Alco, Arkansas.
