Ella was the daughter of Aaron and Anna Stees; and sister of John, Jacob, Esther and Margaret. Her mother died when Ella was very young. She was raised by her older brother (John Stees) and his wife (Rebecca).

On March 12, 1890, Ella married George Rhoads. He was a conductor for the railroad. Their children were Arthur, Albert, James and Edna.

Ella was always active in the Methodist Church, wherever she lived. She lived her final 13 years at the Methodist Home on Rodgers Avenue in Baltimore.
