Iola was born the only girl among six boys. Five brothers were older, including Lewis 'Louie'. At least three of her brothers are known to have died in CA.
She remained in NE until the late 30's or early 40's. By 1943, she had met Russell Clayton, when they were married in Oakland. According to her daughter, there were two brothers besides Barbara. One of Barbara's nieces continued Barbara's research in family history.
Although, Iola lived much of her life in CA, her friends and family in NE will remember her through the Dixon M. E. Ladies Aid cookbook, especial her recipes for Nut Bread, Sunset Salad, Hawaiiana Banana Salad, and Sausages with Sweet Potatos.
Iola was visiting her daughter, when she died. Iola is buried in Rolling Hills Cemetery in Contra Costa County where she'd lived for years. Her husband would be buried there eight years later.
