Mrs. H. C. Kessel Called By Death - Pioneer Merced Resident Dies After Long Illness; Services To Be Held Sunday
Mrs. Henry C. Kessel, 59, for fifty-five years a resident of Merced, died at her home there at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon after a year's illness.
Born at Staten Island, N.Y., on June 5, 1871, she went to Merced with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Reuter, when 4 years old. Except for a few years when she lived at Salinas and Stockton she had resided at Merced since.
She was a member of the Woodmen of Woodcraft and the St. Luke's Guild of Merced.
Surviving her are three daughters, Mrs. J. W. McMaster, Berkeley; Mrs. J. R. Graham, Jr., Merced; Miss Jane Kessel, Merced; and two sons, Owen M. Kessel of Sacramento and Leland C. Kessel of Modesto. She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Chester Welch, Mrs. Merrill Morse and Mrs. Clifford Myers of Merced, and four brothers, George Reuter, San Francisco; Will Reuter, Wilmington, Cal., Charles Reuter, Reno, Nev., and Isadore Reuter, Merced.
Also surviving her are seven little grandchildren, four girls and three boys.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon in the Welch & Griffin Funeral Chapel at Merced. Archdeacon W. H. Hawken of the Espiscopal Church in Fresno will officiate at the chapel. The services at the Evergreen mausoleum will be conducted by members of the Women of Woodcraft.
Entombment will be in the Evergreen mausoleum alongside the body of her late husband, who preceded her in death five weeks ago Thursday.
