"Amariah Virginia Renfrow's Death
Wife of Samuel Hunter Griffin
After a lingering illness extending through a period of many months, Mrs. S.H. Griffin, a highly esteemed and widely known lady, passed away at the home of her son, Mr. G.A. Griffin, in this city, late Tuesday afternoon. For many months Mrs. Griffin had been in declining and very feeble health, and while her death has been expected for some time, the announcement of the end came as a shock to all who loved her so well and favorably knew her. With her husband and daughters, she resided near this place and recently came to Nashville to visit her son and to be under close care of local Physicians. But dispite all that medical science could do and the tender nursing of members of her family and solicitous friends, she rapidly succumbed to the ravages of Brights Disease and peacefully sank into that sweet sleep that knows no awakening.
Mrs. Griffin was the daughter of the late Wilson Renfrow and was one of thirteen brothers and sisters, three of whom survive her, Viz: Messrs Perry V. Renfrow, of Lewistown, NC.; William Renfrow, New Bern, NC,; and Mrs. M.E. Riggan, of Rolesville, NC. At the age of 19 years, a few days over forty years ago, she was happily wedded to Mr. Samuel H. Griffin, who survives her and is regarded as one of the county's best citizens. Surviving her there are seven children, Viz: Messrs. S.S. Griffin, John H. Griffin, George A. Griffin, A.S. Griffin, C.R. Griffin and Misses Minnie and Ida Griffin. During all these years she has been a most faithful wife and Help-mate, mother and friend. It was after the close of the great struggle between the States she linked her destiny to the man of her choice; one who had braved the conflicts of warfare and the sore trials of a faithful confederate soldier. And when the great work of the rebuilding the southland from it's desolate state began, like the true woman she was and with that true characteristic of a southern girl, she was and has ever been faithful to her devoted husband and materially assisted in making the home, once so happy and radient by her presence. One by one she had witnessed the visits of the hand of death into the family circle until now only three; two brothers and a sister, are left of the family of devoted brothers and sisters. And yesterday afternoon, her remains were taken to the late home and consigned to the grave in the rapidly growing family burial lot. The pall-bearers were; Messrs. S.F. Austin, N.C. Warren, J.D. Winstead, Z.V. Jenkins, J.J. Jones and J.D. Nelms. To the Bereaving husband and children and many relations, the sincere sympathy of our people is extended in their hour of sore bereavement."
