William Reiners
Services for William A. Reiners, 87, of Canby, were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby, with Reverend Ronald Warnes officiating. Reiners died on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Sioux Valley Canby Hospital in Canby.
Rev. Don Van Klompenburg sang "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" and "Because He Lives." The congregation sang "Amazing Grace'' and "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic." Karen Olsen was organist.
Honorary casketbearers were the members of the Last Man's Company. Active casketbearers were Leon VanDerostyne, James VanDerostyne, Gary VanDerostyne, Gerald VanDerostyne, Michael Nelson, and Tim Nelson. Interment was in the Canby City Cemetery.
William A. Reiners was born on Jan. 2, 1912, in Yellow Medicine County, to Frederick and Wilhelmine (Harms) Reiners. He was raised on the family farm near Canby, and attended country school. He was baptized and confirmed at the German Lutheran Church in Canby.
In 1942 he entered the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served with the 251st Medical Division while stationed in New Guinea, New Britain, the Philippines, and Japan. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1945, and returned to Canby. He worked as a carpenter, and also worked on road construction for many years. Reiners was a true handyman, and could fix almost anything.
He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby, the Clark-Hanson V.F.W. Post of Canby, the Porter American Legion, and the Cooties.
Reiners is survived by his sister, Marie Reiners of Canby; nephews: Richard (Doris) Reiners of Lakeville, Gary (Kitty) Reiners of Rochester, Gordon (Dolores) Nelson of Prior Lake, and Alan Reiners of Fargo, N.D.; and nieces: Virginia (Lawrence) VanDerostyne of Canby, and Arlene (Henry) Jerzak of Porter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: George, Harm, and Fred; sisters: Ann and Lillian; and a nephew, Verden Nelson.
