Actor. Prolific character player of Hollywood films. He is best-remembered as the crusty Captain Englehorn in "King Kong" (1933), whose ship carries the ill-fated film crew to Skull Island. Born Franz Reicher in Munich, Germany, he began acting as a teenager and from 1899 was frequently seen on the London and New York stage. He entered films as a director in 1915, and after alternating between movies and Broadway settled in Hollywood as an actor in 1926. Reicher was typically cast as an authority figure, and during World War II he played Nazi officials and mad scientists. He was also a respected acting teacher. His 200 films include "The Clue" (1915), "Wise Husbands" (1921), "Four Sons" (1928), "Mata Hari" (1931), "Son of Kong" (1933), "Magnificent Obsession" (1935), "The Story of Louis Pasteur" (1936), "Anthony Adverse" (1936), "Stage Door" (1937), "To Be or Not to Be" (1942), "The Song of Bernadette" (1943), "The Mummy's Ghost" (1944), "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (1947), and "Samson and Delilah" (1949). Reicher retired in 1951.
