Georgia Lillian Reed Hodges Ahrens of Pilot Knob died January 25, 2012 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Festus at the age of 87 years, nine months and 13 days.
She was born April 12, 1924 in Enough, MO in Iron County to Samuel Brown Reed, Jr. and Pearl Ardania Williams Reed. She last resided at the Meadowbrook Assisted Living Facility in Pilot Knob.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Louia Amiol Hodges of Belleview, MO who died during WW II in Germany in 1945. Preceding her in death were her late husband, George Edward Ahrens who died in 1997. Others preceding her in death were her parents Samuel Brown Reed. Jr. and Pearl Ardania Williams Reed of Belleview; son Arthur John Ahrens of Pilot Knob, brothers Luther Thomas Reed of Bonne Terre, Everett Lee Reed of Belleview, William Joseph Reed of Farmington and Lonnie Andrew Reed of Belleview; sisters Mollie Lenora Reed Boring of Belleview, Gladys Lena Reed Anderson of Clinton, IL, infant sister Donnie L. Reed of Piedmont and newborn sister Etta Mae Reed of Enough.
She is survived by two sons and their spouses: Louis Allen Hodges and Mary Dailey Hodges of Parkland, FL and Michael William Ahrens and Carla J. Stromback Ahrens of Morrisonville, NY; grandchildren Melissa Ann Ahrens, Jennifer Sue Ahrens and Allison Dawn Ahrens of West Warwick, RI, Blake Daniel Ahrens Byrnes of Warwick, RI, Michael Allen Hodges and spouse Christine Maria Thomas Hodges of Coconut Creek, FL, Samantha Lynn Ahrens of Lake Placid, NY, Shawn Michael Ahrens of Jay, NY and two great-grandchildren, Daniel Thomas Hodges of Coconut Creek, FL and Corey Austin Ahrens of W. Warwick, RI. She leaves one sister, Dorothy Helen Reed Russell of Columbia, MO, many nieces and nephews and other family, as well as numerous friends.
Georgia was a licensed practical nurse for many years and worked at the Fredericktown Hospital, the Baptist Home in Arcadia, St. Mary's Hospital in Ironton and St. Mary's Hospital in Pilot Knob. Prior to her nursing career, she worked at the Arcadia Post Office and also at the Arcadia Valley Bank. She was a long time member of both the First Baptist Church of Belleview and Ironton.
She served as treasurer and on the board of directors for the Fredericks Senior Apartments for several years, was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary, belonged to the Fort Hill Methodist Church Quilting Circle, was a member of Modern Woodmen and was the winner in the Bonnet Belles Dress Contest and crowned queen during the Iron County Centennial in 1957. Georgia loved music and had learned to play the piano, organ, accordion, guitar and harmonica. She once performed for KMOX Radio, playing the guitar.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Cole Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Huffman officiating. Burial was in the Arcadia Valley Memorial Cemetery in Arcadia.
