— M. Pauline Self, 81, of Rushville, died Monday, April 6, 2009.
Born Jan. 11, 1928 in Rushville, she was the daughter of Floyd Redden and Helen (McCane) Redden, both deceased. She married James D. Self May 17, 1947; he preceded her in death Nov. 7, 2007.
Mrs. Self lived her entire life in Rushville and was a 1946 graduate of Rushville High School. She worked 38 years as a cafeteria employee with Rushville Consolidated High School. She was a lifetime member and past treasurer of Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Rushville.
Survivors include son, Neil (Debbie) Self of Jefferson City, Mont.; daughter, Debbie (Ward) Farlow of Rushville; brother, Howard (Seraph) Redden of Rushville; grandson, Chad (Wendy) Walker of Rushville; step grandchildren, Laurie (Brian) Bennett of Bowling Brook, Ill. and Tory Wiseman of Helena, Mont.; and four great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by sister, Norma Miller, and grandson, Derk Walker.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Mick Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Rushville's East Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Moster Mortuary in Rushville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Presbyterian Church or the Boys & Girls Club of Rush County.

Lester is the oldest daughter of Oscar Abraham McCane (1877-1964) & Ella Ada (Polley) McCane(1886 – 1968) married 5/24/1901 in Kentucky they moved to Rushville, IN in January 1950.
Oscar is the son of James McCane. James married Nancy Ellen Sanks (1862-1900). Ellen's father and mother were both doctors and lived in Washington, KY near Maysville and came from London, England. James McCane carried his mothers name because of getting pregnant to a wealthy man of the community named Withington who refused to marry her until she began to show at which time James's mother, refused Withington. James' mother died a few years after. James was born in Augusta, KY in December of 1832 and both families were people of culture and wealth. James & Ellen had eleven children too.
Ella Polley is the daughter of William Jasper Polley (Born 1/18/1841 and died 4/23/1923 in Vanceburg, Lewis County, KY) and Nancy Anna Bivins (Born 6/26/1849 and died 5/26/1936 in Lewis County, KY) one of eleven children born July 12, 1886 in Lewis County at Martin, KY now known as Queens, KY. Ann's mother's last name was Essic and Jasper's mother's last name was Bane. They came to Lewis County, Kentucky from the mountains of Virginia. The name Polley originated in England and means many.
Oscar was born in Rowan County, KY on September 3, 1877 and spent most of his life in Lewis County, KY around the Charters community. When he died Oscar was the last of eleven (11) children although it is unknown if he was the youngest of his brothers and sisters. Oscar died January 12, 1964 at the age of 86 in Rushville, IN and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.
Ella was born in Lewis County, KY on July 12, 1886 and spent most of her life in Lewis County. She too was one of eleven children and its unknown if she was the youngest of her brothers & sisters. Ella died February 13, 1968 at the age of 81 in Rushville, IN and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville next to Oscar.

(1928-1992) of Cincinnati, OH and Mildred Jones & Edna Flinders both of Mansfield, OH. He had operated a small grocery in East Vanceburg, KY before he retired and moved to Rushville in August 1967 to be with his mother. He was a member of the Church of God in Vanceburg. Phineas died March 23, 1968 in Rushville, IN at the age of 65 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville, IN close to his parents.
Elwood T. (1903 – 1955) Born November 3, 1903 near Charters in Lewis County, KY he never married. Elwood died January 14, 1953, in Rushville, IN at the age of 51 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville, IN next to his parents.
Lester Helen (1906 – 1987) Born July 30, 1906 near Charters in Lewis County, KY she married Floyd E. Redden (1901-1984) on July 4, 1923. Together they had three children: Howard, Pauline (Mrs. James D. Self) & Norma (Mrs. George Miller) all of Rush County. She was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church and active in the church's women's association. She was also a member of the Rushville Township Friendly Homemakers. Lester & Floyd is the reason for the McCane migration to Rush County moving there in the 1940's where they lived in Rushville and Rush County most of their lives. Lester died July 7, 1987 in Rushville at the age of 80 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville, IN next to Floyd.
Ward Benjaman (1908 – 1956) Born September 27, 1908 near Charters in Lewis County, KY he married Jewell Dixon on December 23, 1946. Together they had one son, Eugene. Ward was a veteran of World War II, having served four years, mostly overseas; he formerly lived in Rushville then moved back to Vanceburg, KY, where he spent two years farming, then bought a farm in West Union, OH where he only lived eight months before his passing. Ward died August 12, 1956 at his home in West Union, OH at the age of 47 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville, IN close to his parents.
Elsie Gurtrude (1911 – 1984) Born February 26, 1911 near Charters in Lewis County, KY she married Albert K. Porter on October 17, 1936. Albert & Elsie moved to Rushvile in August 1944. While Elsie & Albert did not have any children of their own many of their nephews and nieces remember staying overnight with them and considered them surrogate parents. Elsie died May 22, 1984, in Rushville, IN at the age of 73 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville next to Albert.
Ica Mae (1913 – 1977) Born October 18, 1913 near Charters in Lewis County, KY she married Edward Anthony Hanley (1918-1972). Together they had five children: Randall A. of Indianapolis, Roger Wayne (1946-1973), Edward Phillip (1949-1989), Daniel Joseph of New York. & Lana Marie (Mrs. Michael Parrinello) of Indianapolis. Ica died April 21, 1977 in Rushville, IN at the age of 63 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville next to Edward Anthony.
Manford James (1916 – 1973) Born May 1, 1916 near Charters in Lewis county, KY he married Pauline Owens (1926-1996). Together they had two children: Clay & Oscar D. Five step-children: Frank, Larry, Connie (1948-1999), Vivian (1952-2013) & James "Jamie" (1959-2009) Frazee. Manford is a World War II veteran. A retired self-employed upholsterer, he lived in Rushville & Rush County for 21 years before his death. Manford died September 10, 1973 at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis at the age of 57 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.
Willard Day (1918 – 1988) Born November 27, 1918 near Charters in Lewis Count, KY he married Beatrice Lorene Cooper (1919-1998) on December 23, 1939. Together they had three children: Darlene (Mrs. Albert Morris) of Henderson, Rush County, IN; Dean of Florida & Darrell of Rush County. Willard is a World War II Navy veteran and retired from Allison's Division of General Motors in Indianapolis, after several years' employment as a graphic engineer. He was a member of the Rushville Church of the Nazarene, Rushville American Legion, the DAV and an active member of the Rushville Creative Art Association. He was also an avid artist and musician playing the guitar, mandolin & banjo. Willard died April 12, 1988 in Rush County at the age of 69 at the family garden on River Road and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville next to Lorene.
Audrey Jewell (1921 – 2008) Born October 3, 1921 near Charters in Lewis County, KY she married Clyde J. Raike (1921-1964) on February 27, 1942 in Annapolis, Md. Clyde died on October 16, 1964 and Audrey married Dalton Carroll Minneman (1923-1998) on December 27, 1967. Together Clyde & Audrey had four children: Kenneth Ray (stillborn at birth in 1949), Brenda (Mrs. Terry Hornaday) of Rushville, Jerry of Seale, Alabama & Greg of Indianapolis. She worked for the Schnadig Furniture Corporation in Rushville, IN for many years before retiring from there. She was a member of the Rushville American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #150 and helped with many fundraisers and as a historian. She was also active in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was a lifetime member of the DAV Auxiliary. She was also active at the Rush County Senior Center. Audrey died September 2, 2008 at home in Rushville at the age of 86 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville between Clyde & Dalton. She was the last surviving member of Oscar and Ella's eleven children.
Ancil Tolbert (1924 – 2003) Born June 16, 1924 in Vanceburg, Lewis County, KY he married Mary Lou Lanning on May 15, 1960. Together they have one child, Keith of Rushville, IN. He worked at the Original Tractor Cab Company in Arlington from 1962 to 1972, and then worked for the Rush County Highway Department from 1972 to 1984. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre with Company I, 164th Infantry of the Americal Division. He was a member of the Rushville VFW and American Legion Post #150. Ancil like his brothers Willard & Glenford was an avid musician playing the guitar, banjo and his favorite the mandolin. Ancil died November 28, 2003 at the St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, IN at the age of 79 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.
Glenford Newell (1927 – 2008) Born February 26, 1927 near Charters in Lewis County, Ky., he married Gloria Jean Buchanan July 23, 1954. Together they had six children: sons, Marc, David and John McCane, all of Rushville; daughters Glenna (Roy) Stevens of Indianapolis, Laurel Holland of Gwyneville and Paula McDougle of Indianapolis. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as an artillery gunner at the Panama Canal. He worked for the Schnadig Furniture Corporation for more than 30 years, and Foamcraft in Indianapolis until his retirement. He was also an avid musician, golfer and bowler. He was a member of the Rushville Elks #1307, American Legion Post #150, and the VFW. In 2006, he served as Grand Marshall for the Rushville St. Patrick's Parade. Glenford died April 7, 2008, at home in Rushville, IN at the age of 81 and is buried in Hannegan Cemetery near Henderson in Rush County next to Gloria.

Phineas Henery (1902 – 1968) born March 31, 1902 near Charters in Lewis County, KY he had three children: Arnold C. (1928-1992) of Cincinnati, OH and Mildred Jones & Edna Flinders both of Mansfield, OH. He had operated a small grocery in East Vanceburg, KY before he retired and moved to Rushville in August 1967 to be with his mother. He was a member of the Church of God in Vanceburg. Phineas died March 23, 1968 in Rushville, IN at the age of 65 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville, IN close to his parents.
Elwood T. (1903 – 1955) Born November 3, 1903 near Charters in Lewis County, KY he never married. Elwood died January 14, 1953, in Rushville, IN at the age of 51 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville, IN next to his parents.
Lester Helen (1906 – 1987) Born July 30, 1906 near Charters in Lewis County, KY she married Floyd E. Redden (1901-1984) on July 4, 1923. Together they had three children: Howard, Pauline (Mrs. James D. Self) & Norma (Mrs. George Miller) all of Rush County. She was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church and active in the church's women's association. She was also a member of the Rushville Township Friendly Homemakers. Lester & Floyd is the reason for the McCane migration to Rush County moving there in the 1940's where they lived in Rushville and Rush County most of their lives. Lester died July 7, 1987 in Rushville at the age of 80 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville, IN next to Floyd.
Ward Benjaman (1908 – 1956) Born September 27, 1908 near Charters in Lewis County, KY he married Jewell Dixon on December 23, 1946. Together they had one son, Eugene. Ward was a veteran of World War II, having served four years, mostly overseas; he formerly lived in Rushville then moved back to Vanceburg, KY, where he spent two years farming, then bought a farm in West Union, OH where he only lived eight months before his passing. Ward died August 12, 1956 at his home in West Union, OH at the age of 47 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville, IN close to his parents.
Elsie Gurtrude (1911 – 1984) Born February 26, 1911 near Charters in Lewis County, KY she married Albert K. Porter on October 17, 1936. Albert & Elsie moved to Rushvile in August 1944. While Elsie & Albert did not have any children of their own many of their nephews and nieces remember staying overnight with them and considered them surrogate parents. Elsie died May 22, 1984, in Rushville, IN at the age of 73 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville next to Albert.
Ica Mae (1913 – 1977) Born October 18, 1913 near Charters in Lewis County, KY she married Edward Anthony Hanley (1918-1972). Together they had five children: Randall A. of Indianapolis, Roger Wayne (1946-1973), Edward Phillip (1949-1989), Daniel Joseph of New York. & Lana Marie (Mrs. Michael Parrinello) of Indianapolis. Ica died April 21, 1977 in Rushville, IN at the age of 63 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville next to Edward Anthony.
Manford James (1916 – 1973) Born May 1, 1916 near Charters in Lewis county, KY he married Pauline Owens (1926-1996). Together they had two children: Clay & Oscar D. Five step-children: Frank, Larry, Connie (1948-1999), Vivian (1952-2013) & James "Jamie" (1959-2009) Frazee. Manford is a World War II veteran. A retired self-employed upholsterer, he lived in Rushville & Rush County for 21 years before his death. Manford died September 10, 1973 at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis at the age of 57 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.
Willard Day (1918 – 1988) Born November 27, 1918 near Charters in Lewis Count, KY he married Beatrice Lorene Cooper (1919-1998) on December 23, 1939. Together they had three children: Darlene (Mrs. Albert Morris) of Henderson, Rush County, IN; Dean of Florida & Darrell of Rush County. Willard is a World War II Navy veteran and retired from Allison's Division of General Motors in Indianapolis, after several years' employment as a graphic engineer. He was a member of the Rushville Church of the Nazarene, Rushville American Legion, the DAV and an active member of the Rushville Creative Art Association. He was also an avid artist and musician playing the guitar, mandolin & banjo. Willard died April 12, 1988 in Rush County at the age of 69 at the family garden on River Road and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville next to Lorene.
Audrey Jewell (1921 – 2008) Born October 3, 1921 near Charters in Lewis County, KY she married Clyde J. Raike (1921-1964) on February 27, 1942 in Annapolis, Md. Clyde died on October 16, 1964 and Audrey married Dalton Carroll Minneman (1923-1998) on December 27, 1967. Together Clyde & Audrey had four children: Kenneth Ray (stillborn at birth in 1949), Brenda (Mrs. Terry Hornaday) of Rushville, Jerry of Seale, Alabama & Greg of Indianapolis. She worked for the Schnadig Furniture Corporation in Rushville, IN for many years before retiring from there. She was a member of the Rushville American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #150 and helped with many fundraisers and as a historian. She was also active in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was a lifetime member of the DAV Auxiliary. She was also active at the Rush County Senior Center. Audrey died September 2, 2008 at home in Rushville at the age of 86 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville between Clyde & Dalton. She was the last surviving member of Oscar and Ella's eleven children.
Ancil Tolbert (1924 – 2003) Born June 16, 1924 in Vanceburg, Lewis County, KY he married Mary Lou Lanning on May 15, 1960. Together they have one child, Keith of Rushville, IN. He worked at the Original Tractor Cab Company in Arlington from 1962 to 1972, and then worked for the Rush County Highway Department from 1972 to 1984. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre with Company I, 164th Infantry of the Americal Division. He was a member of the Rushville VFW and American Legion Post #150. Ancil like his brothers Willard & Glenford was an avid musician playing the guitar, banjo and his favorite the mandolin. Ancil died November 28, 2003 at the St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, IN at the age of 79 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.
Glenford Newell (1927 – 2008) Born February 26, 1927 near Charters in Lewis County, Ky., he married Gloria Jean Buchanan July 23, 1954. Together they had six children: sons, Marc, David and John McCane, all of Rushville; daughters Glenna (Roy) Stevens of Indianapolis, Laurel Holland of Gwyneville and Paula McDougle of Indianapolis. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as an artillery gunner at the Panama Canal. He worked for the Schnadig Furniture Corporation for more than 30 years, and Foamcraft in Indianapolis until his retirement. He was also an avid musician, golfer and bowler. He was a member of the Rushville Elks #1307, American Legion Post #150, and the VFW. In 2006, he served as Grand Marshall for the Rushville St. Patrick's Parade. Glenford died April 7, 2008, at home in Rushville, IN at the age of 81 and is buried in Hannegan Cemetery near Henderson in Rush County next to Gloria.

— M. Pauline Self, 81, of Rushville, died Monday, April 6, 2009.
Born Jan. 11, 1928 in Rushville, she was the daughter of Floyd Redden and Helen (McCane) Redden, both deceased. She married James D. Self May 17, 1947; he preceded her in death Nov. 7, 2007.
Mrs. Self lived her entire life in Rushville and was a 1946 graduate of Rushville High School. She worked 38 years as a cafeteria employee with Rushville Consolidated High School. She was a lifetime member and past treasurer of Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Rushville.
Survivors include son, Neil (Debbie) Self of Jefferson City, Mont.; daughter, Debbie (Ward) Farlow of Rushville; brother, Howard (Seraph) Redden of Rushville; grandson, Chad (Wendy) Walker of Rushville; step grandchildren, Laurie (Brian) Bennett of Bowling Brook, Ill. and Tory Wiseman of Helena, Mont.; and four great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by sister, Norma Miller, and grandson, Derk Walker.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Mick Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Rushville's East Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Moster Mortuary in Rushville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Presbyterian Church or the Boys & Girls Club of Rush County.

M Pauline is the daughter of Floyd E. and Lester Helen (McCane) Redden.
Lester is the oldest daughter of Oscar Abraham McCane (1877-1964) & Ella Ada (Polley) McCane(1886 – 1968) married 5/24/1901 in Kentucky they moved to Rushville, IN in January 1950.
Oscar is the son of James McCane. James married Nancy Ellen Sanks (1862-1900). Ellen's father and mother were both doctors and lived in Washington, KY near Maysville and came from London, England. James McCane carried his mothers name because of getting pregnant to a wealthy man of the community named Withington who refused to marry her until she began to show at which time James's mother, refused Withington. James' mother died a few years after. James was born in Augusta, KY in December of 1832 and both families were people of culture and wealth. James & Ellen had eleven children too.
Ella Polley is the daughter of William Jasper Polley (Born 1/18/1841 and died 4/23/1923 in Vanceburg, Lewis County, KY) and Nancy Anna Bivins (Born 6/26/1849 and died 5/26/1936 in Lewis County, KY) one of eleven children born July 12, 1886 in Lewis County at Martin, KY now known as Queens, KY. Ann's mother's last name was Essic and Jasper's mother's last name was Bane. They came to Lewis County, Kentucky from the mountains of Virginia. The name Polley originated in England and means many.
Oscar was born in Rowan County, KY on September 3, 1877 and spent most of his life in Lewis County, KY around the Charters community. When he died Oscar was the last of eleven (11) children although it is unknown if he was the youngest of his brothers and sisters. Oscar died January 12, 1964 at the age of 86 in Rushville, IN and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.
Ella was born in Lewis County, KY on July 12, 1886 and spent most of her life in Lewis County. She too was one of eleven children and its unknown if she was the youngest of her brothers & sisters. Ella died February 13, 1968 at the age of 81 in Rushville, IN and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville next to Oscar.
