Mildred Rector Dungan, 98, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester.
Born June 2, 1906, in Seven Mile Ford, she was the youngest child of Thomas B. Rector and Mary Ella Bonham Rector.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. "Ted" Dungan; one granddaughter, Jennifer L. Dungan; three brothers and eight sisters.
A graduate of Marion College and Emory & Emory College, she began her teaching career in a one-room school in Smyth County and continued teaching in the county until her family moved to Alexandria in 1955. There she continued her career until retiring in 1971.
After the death of her husband of 40 years, James J. Dungan, she moved to Glade Spring, where she took an active part in the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at Old Glade and was a member of The Glade Spring Garden Club.
She was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church and several educational organizations.
In more recent years, she lived with her son, Gary and wife Anne in New Orleans, La. and since 1998 with her daughter Carolyn Woodrum and husband Ray in Winchester.
In addition to her son and daughter, she is survived by four grandchildren, Andrew S. Woodrum, Matthew T. Woodrum, Sarah L. Dungan and Anne Elizabeth Dungan; one great-grandson, Colby Scott Woodrum; four nieces, Elsie Walker, Mary Ella Pennington, Carley Greer and Sarah Marie Dungan.
Funeral services will be conducted in Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Chilhowie. Interment will be in Middle Fork Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home in Chilhowie is in charge of arrangements.
