John Rudolph Reber, 83, longtime Malin resident, died Wednesday at PIH after a brief illness.
He was born April 5, 1889, in Wyatka, Russia. A year later his father, the late Samuel Reber, a farmer and cheesemaker, moved his family back to his native Switzerland.
In 1911 Mr. Reber started working on a farm and in 1912 took a position under the world's champion cheesemaker, P.H. Kasper. To further his knowledge of cheese production he studied at the University of Wisconsin dairy school, later returning to the manufacturing business until February 1914, when he came west to Beiber, Calif., working there at his trade. He took out citizenship papers at this time.
In 1921 Mr. Reber came to Malin and with the help of famers and bussinessmen originated the Malin Cheese and Produce Co., which he managed. He also managed the Langell Valley Dairy Association which he organized in 1929.
Mr. Reber was active in business and politics. He was a past director of the Malin Chamber of Commerce and served on the Klamath County School Board and Klamath Irrigation Board. He was justice of the peace of the Tulelake district for eight years. He served as a Klamath County commissioner from 1940 until 1948. He served as a Klamath County commissioner from 1940 until 1948. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1247.
In later years he owned and operated the Malin Cafe and Lounge which he sold in 1956 when he retired.
Mr. Reber is survived by his widow, the former Beulah Smith, whom he married Nov. 21, 1914, in Adin, CA; daughter, Cora Rogers, Chiloquin; son, Leslie, Malin; sister, Rose Ueltshi, Switzerland; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
