FLORENCE READ GOENS, 82, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2002. A lifelong resident of the Peninsula, she was a member of Steven's Memorial Baptist Church. Mrs. Goens was a member of the Warwick Chapter #43 of the Eastern Star and a loving mother, grandmother and sister. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, Charles Hill Goens, Sr.; a son, William R. Goens; and two brothers, Martin B. and Cecil Read, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory four sons, Charles H. Goens, Jr. and his wife, Christine, of Smithfield, Virginia; Larry Curtis Goens and his wife, Lynne, of Yorktown; Gerald E. Goens and his wife, Debbie, of Yorktown; and Stephen Lee Goens and his wife, Carol Jean, of Newport News; two sisters, Alma Davis and her husband, Vernon, of Gloucester, and Francis Holt of Hampton; a brother, Douglas A. Read, and his wife, Dorothy, of Hampton; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 16, in Amory Funeral Home Chapel, Grafton, with Rev. David Hampton officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. An Eastern Star Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, followed by a visitation with the family. Amory Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
