Ruth Read Blackman

Ruth Read Blackman, 93, of Lynchburg, and formerly of Charlottesville, died on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at her residence. Born on April 22, 1918, in Palmer Springs, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Henry Read Sr. and Ruth Kimball Read. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Raymond Scrivener Blackman, three brothers, William Henry Read Jr., James Kimball Read and Lewis Wright Read, and a sister, Pela Read Gilmore.

Survivors include her son, Dr. William A. Blackman (Robin), of Lynchburg, her daughter, Susan B. Davis (Bill), of Richmond, and four grandchildren, John Scrivener Blackman, William Read Blackman, Anne Kimball Davis and Robert Blackman Davis. She is also survived by two sisters, Sallie Read Liskey and Jane Read Jacob.

Ruth graduated from Longwood College and taught high school English and Social Studies in Crewe, Va. She then moved to Charlottesville where she was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. She also belonged to UMW Church Circle #5, and the Monticello Garden Club. She remained an avid sports fan throughout her life and was especially interested in UVA basketball. She practiced the art of letter writing as long as she was able, and always enjoyed staying in touch with family and friends.

Her family would like to thank the residents of Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg for welcoming Ruth so warmly, and to the staff for providing such compassionate care. Gratitude is also extended to her Lynchburg physicians and to the caregivers of Home Instead Senior Care for all their many kindnesses.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at Monticello Memory Gardens in Charlottesville, with the Rev. Dr. Edwin Clever officiating. There will also be a gathering of family and friends at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, in the Hume Room at Westminster Canterbury, 501 VES Road in Lynchburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 101 E. Jefferson St, Charlottesville, Va. 22902, or to Peakland United Methodist Church, 4434 Boonsboro Rd, Lynchburg, Va. 24503.
