Beatrice R. Green
CHESAPEAKE – Days short of her 91st birthday, Beatrice R. Green passed away April 7 in Chesapeake.
She was born in Pulaski to Chester and Ruth Miller Read. Bea had three brothers, Bob, Bill and Buck Read.
She is survived by one brother, John (Buck) Read of Kissimmee, Fla., and one daughter, Sheila C. Tigner and husband, Jim, of Chesapeake. She was predeceased by two daughters, Helen Chumbley and Edwina Green.
In many ways Bea was a woman before her time. While other women married and stayed home to rear children, Bea was a lab technician for Hercules powder. She retired after 42 years of service. While other women accepted low standards of education for special needs children, Bea moved her family to Roanoke so that her daughter could attend a special school. Divorced for many years, Bea lived alone in her beloved rock house in Shiloh Community, maintaining the house by herself.
Bea was happiest when she was working outside in her flower beds. Her rock house in Shiloh was always the neighborhood jewel with a profusion of flowers always growing.
After retirement, Bea volunteered for the Senior Citizens. She wrapped packages, gave rides to older people, crocheted caps for kids and baby afghans for newborns.
Friends may meet with the family at Stevens Funeral Home Wednesday, April 10, 10-11 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Shiloh Community Center at 11 a.m.
