Edmee Ellen Read, one of nine children born to Jacob H. and Mary Ellen Cardwell Read, February 1, 1894 at Rexford, Kansas and died June 18, 1973 at Hoxie, Kansas, at the age of 79 years, four months and 17 days, at the Sheridan county hospital following a stroke which she suffered on May 17 while visiting in Hoxie.
she attended school in Rexford. She was a member of the United Methodist church in Republic.
On December 26, 1911 she was united in marriage to Will J. Gardner at Belleville. One son was born to this union.
They operated a cafe in Republic for two years, then moved to the farm north of Republic, which was their home until 1962, when they moved to Calif., to be near their son and family. Following Mr. Gardner's death she moved with her son to Edmond, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in March of 1966, six brothers and sisters.
Those surviving are her son, Marlyn and wife, Anna Marie Gardner, a granddaughter, Penny L. Baker and husband, Michael, two brothers, George Read of Hays, Joe Read, of Buena Vista, Colo.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 21 at the United Methodist Church in Republic with Reverend Loren Silsby officiating. Burial was in Washington Cemetery near Republic.
