Lillian Raye Barrows, 59, died unexpectedly July 8, 2012, from complications following a period of declining health.
Born in Rockland, June 26, 1953, she was the daughter of Vernon and Madeline Murray Raye. Educated locally, Lillian was proud to be a graduate of Rockland District High School.
On July 21, 1970, Lillian married Jeffery Barrows at the Children's Chapel in Rockport. Shortly after their marriage, Jeff was entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany; after the birth of their first daughter, Lillian joined him there. Together they spent just over a year there. Upon returning to the states, the couple settled in Rockland where Lillian took on the full time roll of mother to their growing family. She poured her heart and soul into raising her four children. At the same time she also cared for many other children.
As her children grew and started school, Lillian took on various jobs in the area. She worked for local retailers, packed sardines and most recently was employed at Hannaford since 2003.
At one point Lillian earned her C.N.A. Certificate and worked with the hospice program through PALS. Her family remembered her loving and caring nature made her perfect for this position; however her ability to love those around her made it extremely hard for her when the people she cared for passed on. Lillian made many special friendships during her time with PALS.
Lillian loved knitting. She made numerous mittens and baby sweaters and blankets for friends and family alike. Even last week, when she received the news she would need to spend time in the hospital, Lillian decided she needed to get some yarn to keep her busy. She also kept everyone's spirits up with her undeniable sense of humor, even joking with her doctors whenever she was able. Her family said she loved clowning around and always had a smile that could light up the room.
Lillian's greatest love in life was her family. Spending time with her children and grandchildren was one of her favorite pastimes. It was recently said in a Facebook message that she "lived and breathed her family." Her passing leaves a gaping hole in the hearts of many.
Predeceased by her parents, a brother, Douglas Raye, a sister Sharon Millett, and a sister-in-law Wanda Raye; Lillian is survived by her husband of 41 years Jeffery Barrows of Union; her son Dustin Barrows and his wife Angie of Northport; her daughters, Lori Woodworth and her husband Stephen of Southborough, Massachusetts, Tammy Galeucia and her husband Peter of Westbrook, Shina Athearn and her husband Aaron of Union; a brother William Raye of South Dakota; two sisters, Constance Pritchard of Thomaston, Diane Atwood of Colorado; eleven grandchildren, Stephen, Tiffany, and Jordyn Rose Woodworth, Isaiah and Zacari Manoogian, Sarah and Allison Galeucia, Dominic and Vincent Athearn, Natalie and Madison Barrows; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, July 13, 2012, at Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Wayne Sawyer will officiate.
