TOPPENISH - Sadie R. Kearl (102) of Toppenish passed away on December 20, 2006. She was born in Cunningham, WA on October 28, 1904, the third of ten children born to Charles and Lilly Ray. She attended primary school in Othello and high school in Orting while living with her grandfather. She met her husband, Ross Kearl while picking berries in Sumner and they married in Canada in 1925. He passed away in 1930 after moving to Toppenish.

As a single mom raising two children she picked hops, weeded onions for .10 an hour, worked at the sugar beet factory, various processing plants including Stokeley's, Wapato Evaporator, and was a forelady for Cal Pack for 37 years. She retired at age 63 to enjoy her flower garden, camping and traveling.

She is survived by one son, Ray (Mary) Kearl of Toppenish; one daughter, Norma (Bill) Wilson of Sacramento, CA; one brother, Albert (Betty) Ray of Mabton; one sister, Pearl (Jack) Ermey of Montesano; her sister-in-law, Ruth Ray of Sunnyside; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, one sister, six brothers, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Our sincere thanks to the Toppenish Nursing and Rehab for the love and care given her for the last three years she was a resident.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 from 12-4PM and Wednesday from 10AM-12PM at Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at 1:00PM at Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Colonial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

U & I Surgar was the plant in Toppenish. I can remember the song as if it was in the 60's. Rest in peace.
