BARNWELL, SC - James Dunbar "Bars" Ray, 72, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2009 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bars was born on March 3, 1937 in Healing Springs, SC. He was the son of the late A. N. "Dock" and Jerusha Heckle Ray. He was the grandson of the late Rev. D. W. Heckle, He was a graduate of Blackville High School, class of 1955. He Worked for Milliken for 15 years and a number of years at Dayco, Inc. He worked with the Reserve Force of the Barnwell County Sheriffs Office. He was a former member of the SC Army National Guard. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Rivers Bridge S.C.V. Camp #842, the Aiken-Barnwell Genealogical Society and the society of Professional Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Friendship Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening at Mole Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be members of the Barnwell County Sheriffs office and honorary pallbearers will be members of Rivers Bridge SCV Camp #842.
Survivors include his loving wife, Linda B. Ray of Barnwell; daughters, Shari (Lawrence) Blackwood of Williston, Jerrie Lott of Aiken and Janet Gail (Renee) Johnson of Barnwell; son, James Dunbar Ray II and his fiance Maggie McClellan of Savannah; sister, Joan Williams of Govan; two grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, 2 nieces and 3 nephews.
He was predeceased by son, James Bryan Ray, daughter, Sabrina Elizabeth Ray, brother Allen David Ray, sisters Alice Douglas and Amelia rogers.
The family wishes to thank Regency Hospice and especially Lise Simmons for the loving care shown to Mr. Ray during his illness.
