Dies at Age 79
RUTLAND - Bart Rawlings, 79, Rutland and Middleport businessman, died at his home in Rutland at 7 a.m. today. He had been in ill health, but his death was unexpected.
Mr. Rawlings was a civic leader and a booster for advancement of the two towns. He was a native of Rutland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rawlings. He started his profession with his father, who operated a funeral home, and a livery stable, in Rutland. In 1897, he and his brother, the late Ray Rawlings, and the father formed a funeral home in Rutland.
Graduating from the Clark School of Embalming, Chicago, Mr. Rawlings in 1937 bought the deMain funeral home in Middleport, and in 1933, took into partnership Robert Coats, to form the present Rawlings-Coats funeral home. Coats came to Middleport from Winchester, Va., and he and Mr. Rawlings were closely associated in private life.
Mr. and Mrs. Rawlings had a home at Lake Worth, Fla., and maintained residence there for several months each year.
Mr. Rawlings was a 32nd degree Mason, a Knight Templar, member of the Middleport Rotary Club and of the Meigs County Veterans Memorial Hospital Committee.
Surviving are his wife, Alice Sidenstricker Rawlings; two step-daughters, Lelah Sidenstricker, at home and Mrs. Lady Canaday of Orient and two sisters,Mrs. Guy Mutchler of Rutland and Mrs. Jessie Townsend of Cleveland.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Rawlings-Coats funeral home and burial will be in Miles Cemetery, Rutland.
