Mary "Marie" E. Nimmo, age 91, of Altoona died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Oakwood Villa Nursing Home in Altoona.
She was born April 27, 1917, in Neenah to John and Theora (Lund) Rathke. She married Hammond Nimmo on April 29, 1941, in Eau Claire. Hammond passed away suddenly in 1969, and Marie became a single mom caring for her children. She was also very proud of the time she spent volunteering after her children grew up; but she loved kids, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.
She loved to play bingo and also was a great baker and cook and enjoyed crocheting. She took advantage of any time she could to work in her flower garden and watch the many birds that came around. She was a past member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was a Cub Scout leader for many years.
She is survived by three sons, Tom (Verlene) of Altoona, Kim (Vickie) of Eleva and Kevin "Pete" (special friend, Sherry Heitkamp) of Altoona; son-in-law, Richard Kappus, of Eau Claire; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, LaVerne Rathke, of Eau Claire; two sisters, Cleo Berg of Eau Claire and Joann (Harold) Reed of Eau Claire; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hammond; one daughter, Lynn Kappus; three brothers, William, Connie and Robert; and one sister, Lorraine Winger.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Stokes, Prock and Mundt Funeral Chapel in Altoona, with the Rev. Karen Hofstad officiating. Burial will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery, Eau Claire.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday at Stokes, Prock and Mundt Funeral Chapel.
