Danville, VA -- Naomi Ruth Rathbone Ashworth of 416 Ashworth Lane Danville, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 23, 2008. She was born in Maggie Valley, North Carolina on August 21, 1928 the youngest daughter of Lucy Owen Rathbone and Jasper P. Rathbone. She spent her childhood and teen years in Hazelwood, North Carolina playing basketball on the girl's high school team for Waynesville High and spent her weekend working at the corner drugstore. In 1947 she moved to Danville and here she met her husband, the late O.C. (John) Ashworth. They were married in October of 1948. They were blessed with two daughters, Fratinia (Tina) Ashworth Sparks and later Lisa O. Ashworth Nichols. She went to work for Dan River Mills in 1948 and worked at Riverside and later in 4-Gray Inspection at Schoolfield inspecting cloth for forty-five years.
She was born again at the former Westover Hills Christian Church when she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and attended North Main Baptist Church, Welcome Baptist Church, and was active with the Beacons Bible Study Group at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.
Her family consist of her daughter Tina and her husband Tommy Sparks of Danville and daughter Lisa and her husband Shane Nichols of Grangeville, Idaho. She leaves four grandchildren who adored her, Todd Jonathan Sparks and wife Tanya Sparks, Jacob Ashworth Sparks and friend Brandi Lewis all of Danville and Carson and Olivia Nichols of Grangeville, Idaho. One great-grandson Tyler Sparks of Danville.
She also leaves behind a dear, dear friend and companion of twelve years, J. E. (Jack) Scearce of Westover Hills in Danville, Virginia. She and Jack loved to visit with folks, go to the mall, take day trips, go out to eat, watch television, and just enjoy one another's company.
She will always be remembered as a very giving person to her family and always, always putting their needs before her own.
Her funeral will be held on Monday, October 27, at 4:00 in the afternoon at North Main Baptist Church and interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Norris Funeral Home on Sunday, October 26, in the evening from 7 to 8:30.
