One source at Ancestry.com says they were married on 8 Oct 1862, which is improbable as that was his death date in Kentucky. A search on rootsweb.com shows he was married 23 Nov 1861 in Rutherford Co, TN. Samuel and Sarah a son, Samuel Houston RANSOM Jr, b in Mississippi 25 Oct 1862, d in TX 1910. Famous photographer Matthew Brady photographed her on 30 May 1862 in Mississippi; evidently the photo is in the National Archives.

According to "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War" Vol 3, p.23: In 1886 a total of 435 Confederates were buried on Squire Bottom's land-this land was chosen because their dead lay thickest on the eastern slope. Although Bottom claimed that about 100 were identified the only remnants of the cemetery was a corner of a stone wall and one headstone-of Samuel H. Ransom of the 1st Tennessee Infantry CSA
