Mary J. Murray Cooley
Mary J. (Randall) Murray Cooley, 95, of La Crosse passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007.
She was born July 24, 1911, at home in New Albin, Iowa, to Elmer D. and Blanche L. (Visgar) Randall. Mary was married to Roy James Murray in 1927 until his death. She later married Theron Monroe "Jim" Cooley in 1947 until he preceded her in death in 1972.
Mary was a devoted mother and loving grandmother, who loved spending time with family. She spent many enjoyable hours crocheting Barbie doll clothes, knitting grandchildren mittens or baby sweaters, reading nursery rhymes and playing Candyland. Mary was known for her Christmas baked goods, delicious home-made soups, excellent crossword ability and Canasta playing.
Survivors include her children, Ronald (Marian) Murray, Linda (Bruce) Hoeth, both of La Crosse, Michael (Kathy) Murray of Madison, and Jerald (Sherry) Cooley, Joyce (Blaine) Ottum, and Terry (Tina) Cooley, all of La Crosse; daughters-in-law, Sharal Murray of Baraboo, Wis., and Sally Murray of Kenosha, Wis.; 33 grandchildren; several grand and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, Roy and Jim, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Mary Alice (George) McCarthy and Ruby Haull; two sons, James A. Murray and Phillip Murray; two grandsons; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marcella Morrison and Aurice "Betty" Quade; and a brother, Nathan Randall.
A graveside service will be at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. A memorial service will also be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Eighth St. and King St., La Crosse. The Rev. Don Iliff will officiate. Friends may call at Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse on Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
