Mrs. Doris Marion Driver, age 94, of Westerly, R.I. and formerly of St. Albans, our beloved mother, grandmother and friend, went to be with the Lord and her husband, Arthur, Oct. 12, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born July 24, 1915, daughter of Maruice and Lilian (Rich) Raleigh. On June 28, 1936, she married Arthur Driver and together raised five children, who all survive her. Her three sons, Neil Driver and his wife, Suzanne, of Chelsea, James Driver and his wife, Doris, of St. Albans, Gary Driver and his wife, Cindy, of Bangs, Texas; her two daughters, Gail Herman and her husband, Leonard, of Leyard, Conn., and Patricia (Suzy) Comforti of Westerly, R.I.; 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; a sister, Anna Raleigh; five brothers, John, Maurice, Walter, Homer, and Arnold Raliegh; and a grandson, Jay Driver.
Doris was the last freshman class of the old St. Albans High School, and the first freshman class to enter BFA, graduating in 1933. She entered the school of nursing in St. Albans until her marriage. She was a homemaker until 1948, then returned to work in nursing at the St. Albans and Kerbs Hospitals until 1955 when she went to work for Dr. Carlton Marshall 1955 - 1963, Dr. William Dempsey 1962 - 1967. She was the chairman of the St. Albans Town Democratic Committee until her retirement in 1976. She traveled the U.S. until the death of her husband Art in 1978. She came out of retirement and was elected and worked as the first female Side Judge in Vermont, for the Franklin County Court System until October of 1984, when she moved to Westerly, R.I. to live with her daughter, Patricia (Suzy) Comforti, until her death.
Doris was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #1, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Unit #758, and the Westerly Hospital Woman's Auxiliary.
Upon her request, there will be no visiting hours, and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
