OBITUARY - JOSEPH HENRY RACER 1858 - 1932
Joseph H. Racer, age 74, of Fairview, a substantial and upright citizen, widely know as an expert master carpenter and active in Masonic circles, died at his home at one o'clock on Monday morning after two years of declining health that began as kidney trouble and developed into dropsy and other complications. In the last six months, Mr. Racer worked a little at his trade of carpentry. His condition was gradually becoming more serious, however, and his death was not unexpected. He died sitting in his chair. He did not resort to hospital treatment, though a short time ago he went to Harrisonburg (Va.) for a diagnosis by Dr. Wright.
Mr. Racer was held in high esteem both as a citizen and workman. He worked on many of the most important jobs in the country. As a carpenter, he had a name for doing honest, reliable work and he slighted nothing and took no short cuts - qualities which were reflected in his general character, as well as in his trade. His fellow Masons loved him. About fifteen years ago, he joined the Disciples Church and became a valuable member of that congregation. Rev. Warren Baldwin of Woodstock, the Pastor who baptized him, came here on Wednesday to conduct the funeral which was held at Beahm's Chapel in the presence of many sorrowing friends and neighbors.
The surviving family consists of two sons, John and Thomas Racer, of Luray, and three daughters, Mrs. Joe D. Judd of Hagerstown (Md.), Mrs. Elmer Judd of Pumpkin Hill, and Mrs. Clarence Crist of Fairview. One son, Walter Racer, and one daughter, Miss Fannie Racer, are dead. Mr. Racer lost his wife four or five years ago. She was Miss Laura Rowe, daughter of the late David Rowe, of Fairview. He was born April 17, 1858 at the old Racer homestead near Beahm's Chapel, now unoccupied and the property of Mrs. B. F. Strickler. His father, Elder John A. Racer, a Brethren Minister, died fourteen years ago in his 88th year. The surviving brothers and sisters are Elder J. Abram Racer, of Luray, William L. Racer, of York Springs, PA, Mrs. Mary Kibler, of Luray, Mrs. Susan Early and Mrs. Sarah Kline, of Broadway, VA. One sister, Mrs. Martha Finter, is deceased.
Gathered around the grave in Beahm's Chapel were the following relatives from a distance: Mrs. Joe D. Judd, husband and daughter of Hagerstown, Md., Mrs. Samuel Early, husband and daughter and Mrs. Noah F. Cline and husband of Broadway, Va., James Rowe and son of Nokesville, Va., and Rexford and Claude Racer of York Springs, Pa. and others from out of the County. The funeral was in charge of the Masons.
