JACK RUTHERFORD

Jack Rutherford, High School Student, Killed
Companion Also Injured
Truck Turns Over on West Custerdale Road
Jack Milton Rutherford, 17, Lincoln high school junior and three-sport letter
winner, was fatally injured early Sunday night when a light truck, driven by
Gale Brennan, 20, home on terminal leave from the army, left Custer street a
half mile west of the city limits and struck a telephone post.
Rutherford, who sustained a fractured skull, was pronounced dead on entrance
to the Holy Family hospital by Coroner Theodore Teitgen, who was at the hospital
when the ambulance arrived. Brennan sustained a fractured collarbone.
According to County Traffic Officer Edward McConnell, who went to the scene of
the accident, the two boys had left the Youth center shortly after 8:30 Sunday
evening for a drive in the pickup truck owned by Rutherford's father, George
Rutherford, of 814 Madison street, heating contractor.
Blinded by Car Lights
Brennan, son of Mrs. Irene Kruck of 401 Cleveland avenue, told Officer McConnell
at the hospital that young Rutherford had permitted him to drive the truck for
a short spin and they went out Custer street. While passing the Andrew Kaufman
home a half mile west of the city limits, Brennan said he was blinded by the
lights of an oncoming car and lost control. The truck, he said, swerved to the
left side of the highway down into a deep ditch and up against a telephone pole,
which was snapped off.
Mr. Kaufman was attracted to the scene by the crash and telephoned for an ambulance.
Coroner Teitgen announced today an inquest will be held as soon as the driver of
the truck, Gale Brennan, is able to testify…
Funeral Wednesday
Funeral service for the high school junior will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at
the Urbanek and Schlei funeral home, the Rev. C. H. Phipps of the First Presbyterian
church officiating. Teammates of the dead athlete will be pallbearers. Burial will
be in Evergreen cemetery.
He was born in this city Jan. 30, 1930, and attended the north side grade schools and
later the Wilson junior high school. He entered Lincoln high school as a sophomore
in the fall of 1945 and played on the school's football and basketball teams winning

letter in basketball, He also won a letter in golf. He played halfback in football
and a guard on the basketball team.
Star School Athlete
As a junior the past school year Rutherford was one of the leading varsity letter
winners in both football and basketball. Playing both right and left halfback, he was
one of the best ground gainers on Coach Nello Pacetti's football team. He jumped into
basketball at the end of the football season and was a regular guard on Coach Al Guepe's
varsity five. He was also a member of the DeMolays.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Rutherford; brother, Thomas, 15; paternal
grandmother, Mrs. P. H. Rutherford, all of this city; and maternal grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Martin Frakes of Menasha.
