Gilbert Quintero Casares, 85, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to be with our Lord on July 5, 2007 surrounded by his family. He was born to Clotilde and Francisco Casares, on May 14, 1922, in San Antonio, Texas.

He was preceded in death by Julia V. Casares, his wife of 52 years, and six brothers and sisters. He is survived by four children: his daughter, Gloria (Dan) Tyler of Lucas, Texas, his three sons, Richard (Tiffany) Casares of Los Angeles, California, Tony (Cynthia) Casares of Washington, DC, and David (Rosie) Casares of Corpus Christi, Texas; five granddaughters, Tiffany (Knoxville, Tennessee), Julie (Dallas, Texas), Tammy (Dallas, Texas), Seanie (Los Angeles, California), and Cazandra (Corpus Christi, Texas), and one grandson, Devin (Corpus Christi, Texas); and four great grandchildren.

A graduate of Corpus Christi High School in 1941, Gilbert was a veteran of WWII where he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations in the United States Army. He then served during the Korean Conflict, as a Command Sergeant Major where he received numerous commendations for Superior Record as an Army Recruiter. Assisting Dr. Hector P. Garcia, Gilbert was a founding member of the American GI Forum in 1948 and served the Corpus Christi, Founding Chapter of the American GI Forum for 50 years through 1998 in various capacities including Recording Secretary, Treasurer, President, Honorary Commander, and Special Assistant to Dr. Hector P. Garcia. He was a Charter Member of the Nueces County Community Action Agency; a member of the Mayor's Committee for Veterans Affairs; a member of the Planning and Zoning Task Force of the Homeport Steering Committee; a Board Vice-Chairman of SER Jobs for Progress; a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans; a member of the American Legion; and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was appointed to the newly created position of Equal Employment Opportunity Officer at ARADMAC (Corpus Christi Army Depot) in 1972. Gilbert retired from Civil Service in 1977. After retirement, he received an official appointment to the Private Industry Council and became Director of the Rural Coastal Bend Private Industry Council's Older Worker Program. Gilbert was a member of the Corpus Christi Sister City Committee and served on the Vera Cruz, Mexico and Toledo, Spain Sister City Committees. He received Mayoral Commendations from Luther Jones, Betty Turner, and Mary Rhodes for Outstanding Community Service. Gilbert was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He also loved playing Dominoes each week with Dr, Hector and other GI Forum members. His charitable actions and love will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation and a rosary were held on Monday, July 9, 2007 at Seaside Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

Interment followed at Seaside Memorial Park.
