Artyce Quigley, 89, of Cathlamet passed away June 24, 2012, at Evergreen-Americana nursing home.

She was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Veblen, S.D., to John A. and Anna C. (Brekke) Sprague. She moved from Veblen to Fairmount, N.D. at age four and graduated from Fairmount High School as valedictorian in 1940.

Artyce moved from Longview to Cathlamet in 1967, and she and John Quigley were married Jan. 27, 1967. He preceded her in death in 2004.

Artyce thought she would be a teacher, but had eight children instead. She was patriotic and loved being the family historian. She loved her job as a tax preparer and was meticulous in her work. Her family will remember her for her wonderful baking, cooking, canning and her talent with words, which led to her beautiful poetry. She also loved music and flowers. She enjoyed sewing and created wedding gowns and garments for the wedding parties for all four daughters.

She is survived by three sons, Gary, Lee (Diane) and Brent (Brenda) Tischer; four daughters, Sandra (Bill) Laycock, Sharlene (Alan) West, Beverly (Duane) Gruenberg and Janine (Terry) Strock; 18 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, John Tischer in 1998; a brother, Hank Sprague; two sisters, Gladys Neth and Cora Sauter; a grandson, Jeff Pummell in 1988; and her first husband, Raymond Tischer in 1992.

A graveside service is planned for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Cemetery with entombment to follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cathlamet First Aid Division, P.O. Box 142, Cathlamet, WA 98612.
