Evelyn Ann CAVANAUGH
Evelyn was born August 17, 1920, to Clyde and Frazie (Hould) Quigley at their homestead on the bench above the Milk River near Malta Montana. She attended the lower grades at the Hould School, a one-room log cabin built by her grandparents, Archie and Lucy Hould. After graduating from Malta High School in 1939, Evelyn traveled to Spokane, Washington to attend Northwestern Business College. On March 2, 1941 she married William J. Cavanaugh. During their marriage, she gave birth to five children, who became the center of her life. She became the sole support for her family in 1962.
In 1965, after several years working at the River Ridge Drugstore, she went to work for Holy Family Hospital, initially as a switchboard operator and later in the business office, until she retired in 1985. She was a member of the St. Charles Altar Society and an auxiliary member of the St. Pious Guild. She also volunteered at the Spokane Veterans Hospital.
Evelyn had a lively sense of humor and always made a genuine connection with those who were lucky enough to meet her. Her brilliant smile and laughter brightened the day. She surrounded her home with flowers, birds, and her children and grandchildren who flitted in and out, always assured of a warm welcome and a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie.
Her son, Gregory M. Cavanaugh, grandson, Jared M. Cavanaugh, and sister, Marge Nyman, preceded her in death.
Her sister, Edna M. Hardin, her daughters, Patricia A. Deschamps and Rita E. Carpenter, her sons, Marcus W. Cavanaugh and Douglas C. J. Cavanaugh, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive her. The true size of her family extends far beyond this list.
Evelyn loved and was loved by a large extended family and many friends. There is no deeper, more fierce and constant love than that of a mother. We will always remember her with gratitude, and joy that we belonged to her. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Holy Cross Mausoleum Chapel at 11:00 am.
