Rev. Alex S. Quigley, Sr., 72, of Newville, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
He was born Monday, November 20, 1933 in Enola, the son of the late Archie M. and Kathryn E. (Bretz) Quigley.
Rev. Quigley was a 1951 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School and also graduated from Messiah College in Grantham. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and had worked as an airplane mechanic at the former Olmstead Air Force Base.
He was a minister for the United Methodist Church for 31 years having started at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Dillsburg in 1966.
He then became the minister for the Blue Mountain Charge which included the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church in Newville, St. Mary's United Methodist Church in Bloserville and the West Hill United Methodist Church in West Hill. He was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Enola. He played softball for the Sheaffer Ball Team and the Mifflin Athletic Association. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed racing Go-karts, dirt track racing, NASCAR, traveling and camping. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Wendy Quigley.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley A. (Feister) Quigley; sons, Alex S. Quigley, Jr. and his wife, Miki of Carlisle, Gregory Quigley and his wife, Jody of Summerdale; daughters, Wanda Griffie and her husband, Keith of Enola and Sherry Devore and her husband, Samuel of Walnut Bottom; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 28, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 4685 Mt. Zion Rd., Enola with Rev. David Watkins and Rev. Tim Bear officiating. Burial with military honrs by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in Stone Church Cemetery, Enola. Visitation will be Thursday, April 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle and on Friday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of services.
