It is with great sadness the children of Edwina (Quesnel) Johnson announce her passing on Saturday the 20th of August at Skagit Valley Hospital. She's with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was the only child of Eugene and Eugenia Quesnel. She was born in Oakland, CA on January 6, 1921. In 1938, Edwina graduated from Berkley High School, then went on to a technical school for business classes.
She met Harvey while he was a produce manager for Safeway and they were married in July of 1939. 1948 brought mom, dad, Gayle and Harvey Jr. to Washington State where they lived in Mount Vernon for one year. Dad worked as assistant manager for Safeway, while mom worked at various restaurants until they bought Frank's grocery store in 1950 on Chuckanut Drive, renaming it Harvey's Grocery. The family lived behind and above the store. They had their grocery business for 36 years.
Mom worked as a clerk and rural route carrier at the Bow Post Office and retired in 1986 after 20 years. They then moved into Burlington to the home where Mom lived at the time of her departure to her new and permanent home in Heaven.
Mom enjoyed her flower gardens, ceramics, sewing, and other crafts, as well as traveling and music. She was very talented, and loved making things for people. She continued to play the piano and organ until a few years ago.
She loved her church family and attended Edison Lutheran Church until moving to Burlington. She then joined the Salem Lutheran Church. She made many friends at both churches and treasured them all.
Our mom loved people and had many friends. She would light up a room whenever she entered. She was an encourager and supporter of her family and friends. She was always there for them. Her faith kept her very close to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and He brought her through many things: four major surgeries, two automobile accidents, losing her home and their business to a fire, and the loss of a grandchild. She held one to her faith and was given the strength and courage to make it through. Now she is face to face with Him. What a blessing she was to all of us kids. Her legacy will live on in our lives.
She is survived by her children, Gayle (Mel) Mocabee, Burlington, Harvey (Juanita) Johnson, Everett, Noel (Sandy) Johnson, Lynnwood, Candy (John) Johnson, Mount Vernon, and Kent Johnson, Portland, OR; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Johnson, and her grandson, MSG Sean M. Mocabee.
Visitation will be held Thursday and Friday, August 25 & 26, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Hulbush Funeral Home, Burlington. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Bow Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Salem Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice
We can rejoice in our sorrow knowing our Mom is now present with the Lord (2 Cor. 5:8)
