J.V. Quarles Funeral Set
Head of Law Firm Here Is Dead at 71; Rites are Saturday

Funeral services for Joseph Very Quarles, III, 71, widely known Milwaukee attorney, will be held at the Phillip J. Weiss funeral home, 1901 N. Farwell av., at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Green Ridge Cemetery, Kenosha.

Mr. Quarles died Thursday at Milwaukee hospital following a brief illness. He was the senior member of the firm of Quarles, Spence & Quarles and lived at 1224 N. Prospect av.

Born in Kenosha Sept 8, 1874, Mr. Quarles was a member of a family long prominent in Wisconsin. His father, Joseph Very Quarles II, served as United States senator and as federal judge for the eastern district of Wisconsin.

Mr. Quarles attended the University of Michigan, receiving a bachelor of philosophy degree in 1896. He then studied law at the Milwaukee law school, which later became part of Marquette university. He entered his father's firm in 1899. He became a partner in 1912 and senior partner in 1935.

During World War I, Mr. Quarles was in charge of food control in Milwaukee county and later served in the field artillery.

He organized the village of Chenequa and served as president of its board of trustees from 1928 to 1936. He was a former president of the Milwaukee chapter of the Izaak Walton league and was the author of the Wisconsin conservation act. He was also a director of the Oil Gear Co.

He was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity, the Milwaukee club, University club, Oconomowoc Lake club, Pine Lake yacht club, Inland Lake Yachting assocation, Chenequa Country club, and Cudworth post of the American Legion.

Mr. Quarles is survived by his wife, Ethel Grant Quarles, and a son, Joseph V. Quarles, jr., general manager of the Simmons Co., Kenosha. There are also two grandchildren, Joseph V. Quarles V, and Julia Grant Quarles.

He was a cousin of Louis and Charles B. Quarles of the law firm of Lines, Spooner and Quarles.

The Rev. Stoddard Patterson of St. Paul's Episcopal church will officiate at the funeral services. Pallbearers will be six members of Mr. Quarles' firm: Thomas H. Spence, Arthur Wickham, Howard T. Foulkes, kenneth P. Grubb, L.J. Burlingame and Edward H. Borgelt.
