Obituary from Halls Funeral Home online:

Jean Purcell McDonald, who served as Postmaster at Round Hill, Virginia, Post Office for 30 years, died in her home on Tuesday, December 4. In 1922, she was born at Tippitt's Hill in Round Hill to parents Sarah Tracey and James Heaton Purcell, who owed and operated Tippitt's Hill orchards. After graduating with an A.B. degree from Duke University, she studied buying and advertising at Tobe-Coburn School in New York City. Her advertising background saw her employed by such landmarks as Woodward & Lothrop, Jelleff's and Henry J. Kaufman & Associates in Washington, DC. She then joined the Red Cross as a staff assistant stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, at the end of WW II. In 1948 she married Marvin Lee McDonald of Bessemer City, NC, and they had four children. The two surviving children are Val McDonald Carter of Springfield, VA, and John Michael McDonald of Charlotte, NC. She also has two grandchildren Nathan Michael Carter and Brendan Thomas Carter, both of whom she adored. In the 1950's and 60's, Jean did freelance feature writing for the old Blue Ridge Herald, the Loudoun Times Mirror and the Fauquier Democrat. While serving as Round Hill's postmaster, she was a member of the National Association of Postmasters and was national editor for the organization's magazine, The Gazette in 1980 and 1981. She retired from the post office in October 1992. Jean's memberships, associations and passions included the Ketoctin Church Foundation, the Loudoun County Public Library Foundation, the Purcellville Library Advisory Board, the Loudoun County 4-H Fair, St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Purcellville, the Round Hill Women's Club and the Sesame Club. Jean will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. In lieu of flowers, gifts or donations may be made to the Ketoctin Endowment, 22 E. Loudoun St., Round Hill, VA 20141, or to the Purcellville Library Advisory Board, Inc., 220 E. Main Street, Purcellville, VA 20132.
