Bernece Leavitt, Dear Mother, Grandma, "Grandma Great", Sister, Aunt and friend passed away peacefully on August 7, 2008 in her Bluffdale home, surrounded by loved ones.
Bernece was the oldest daughter of Howard and Myrtle Stewart Pulsipher, born August 12, 1920 in Las Vegas, NV. She spent her childhood in Mesquite, NV and attended Junior College in St. George, Utah. She married Orson Leavitt on October 9, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Orson and Bernece built their first home in Mesquite, Nevada where they spent nine years and welcomed both of their daughters, Deone and Pamela into the family. They moved to the Hyland Park area of Salt Lake City in January 1948. They welcomed their son Shirl Orson in October 1948. They built a home in the Rosecrest Ward in 1952 and spent many years with family living next door. In 2000, they made their last move into a cozy "apartment" in Shirl and Carma's home in Bluffdale, where they continued to welcome great grandchildren to their wonderful family. Bernece had many loves in her life! Dancing was one of her great loves; she loved to dance with her "Sweetheart" Orson.
She loved the Gospel and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a strong testimony and loved her Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ. She loved her children and grandchildren and loved to spoil them! Throughout her life Bernece held fast to her faith and shared her love of the gospel with her loved ones. She was always willing to serve, giving of her time, talents, substance, hospitality and love. Her service to her family and the church included Office Secretary for the family masonry business, P.T.A. President, Sunday School Secretary, Den Mother, Stake Laurel Leader, MIA President, and Visiting Teacher. She and Orson were MIA dance directors for Ward, Stake, District and Region, and were responsible for Gold and Green Balls, Formal Floor Shows and helped organize Stadium dances. They also both loved serving as Ordinance workers in the Salt Lake Temple for nine years. They hosted Neighborhood Pool Parties, Family Reunions and Bar-B-Ques for many years! Their home was warm and welcoming, with a candy drawer, toys, jewelry for dress-up and a place for sleepovers! Bernece and Orson, along with their family, had many fond memories of Lambourne Avenue, where they were surrounded by family and friends! As well as New Ideal Beach, Bear Lake where, for a time, they were part owners and enjoyed working together as a family. They also loved to travel, Bernece looked forward to family vacations, motor home trips, cruises and family reunions. Bernece always felt blessed and expressed her gratitude for the loving care she received from her family during her years of failing health. She also treasured her life long friends and her thoughtful, loving neighbors in Bluffdale. Bernece was a devoted wife and loving mother. Her family has always shared a special bond of love and togetherness. She was an example to her family and friends and her influence will shine thru her posterity and all who loved her.
She will be dearly missed by her brother Stewart, sister Lucille, children Deone (Nick), Pamela (Robert), Shirl (Carma), her grandchildren Rick (Shareen), Trent (Lisa), Kolten, Niccol (Ruben) Cory (Sarah), Blake (Jennifer), Lance (Holly), Brooke (Matt), Anna (Kevin), 23 great grandchildren and all of her extended family. She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Orson of 67 years, a baby brother, and many other special loved ones and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. at the Bluffdale 1st Ward Chapel, 14400 South 1700 West, where Friends may call from 11 a.m. 12:15 p.m. prior to services.
