John was the son of Joseph Proctor & Alys Singleton. John was born in Lancashire, England and at the age of 18 with his family he came to the United States arriving in New Orleans in April 1830. His family settled in Prairie du Long Township, Monroe County, Illinois. John married Mrs. Nancy Monks
19 January 1850 in Monroe County, IL. John, Nancy & their children moved to California in 1853 and bought 80 acres of land about 2 miles from Centreville, Alameda County, CA for farming. John started the first commercial fruit tree nursery in the south Bay area.
John & Nancy had 3 children: Eliza, Mary & Alice.
