The sad news of the sudden death of Mrs Annie Elizabeth Croft reached this city Sunday afternoon from Huntington, where she had made her home for the past several years.
Mrs Croft had eaten a hearty dinner and gone for a walk when she was attacked by acute indigestion. She hurried home and reached a chair on the porch where she succumbed to the malady shortly after arriving.
Not many weeks ago she had made a visit here, where she had many friends and relatives, and was, apparently in the best of health. She remained here fr about a week mingling among those to whom she was always affectionately attached and among those with whom she had spent the greater portion of her life.
Mrs Annie Elizabeth Croft was born at Mount Tabor, near this city, April 4th, 1858. She was a daughter of Clarkson and Margaret Prince, pioneers settlers of Raleigh county. She was married in early life to John S Hull, to whom one son was born, E Flynn Hull. They resided at Beckley the major portion of their lives and were among the most prominent and successful citizens our county afforded. After the death of Mr Hull in 1898 the large retail store and Hull Hotel, which they owned, were sold, and Mrs Hull built a handsome home where she and her son resided for several years. Some ten years ago she was united in wedlock to Mr Cecil Croft, a prominent and successful business man of Madison, Boone county. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Huntington where they built an elegant home and resided until her death on last Sunday. She is survived by her husband, Hon Cecil Croft, a son E Flynn Hull, three sisters, Mrs Emily Swentzell of Huntington, Mrs Ella Ferguson, of Los Angeles, and Mrs Mary Cole, of Montgomery. Five brothers being Hon I C Prince, of this city, William and James, of Prince, Alfred, of Meadow Creek, and Henry, of Mount Tabor.
The deceased was a member of a prominent family and a popular favorite among the citizens of Beckley and throughout Raleigh county. Her friends are numbered by the hundreds and no death could have cast a deeper gloom over a community than hers.
The remains will be brought to Beckley tomorrow (Wednesday) and interment made in Wildwood cemetery at 10 o'clock. The funeral party going directly from the morning C & O train to the cemetery.
