Retired Teacher Dies at 72
SHAFTSBURY - Mrs. William Allen, 72, the former Ada Priest, well-known resident here, a retired teacher, died Thursday afternoon at Putnam Memorial Hospital after a long period of frail health.
Born in Ardmore, Okla., July 10, 1894, she was the daughter of Henry and Susie (Windsor) Priest. Her early schooling had been received in Texas and New Mexico. She had received her B.S. degree from Castleton State College. She had taught school in Landgrove, Pownal, Woodford and also at Bennington High School, retiring 13 years ago.
Mrs. Allen was a member of the Shaftsbury Methodist Church and a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service of that denomination. She also belonged to the I-40 Club and had actively participated in various projects. Her hobbies had included many collections such as bottles, bells, china cups and saucers and she had exhibited them on occasion.
Survivors are her husband, to whom she was married June 15, 1921; two sons, William Francis Allen of Bridgeport, Conn., and Harley Dean Allen of Charlotte; three granddaughters; two grandsons; nieces, nephews and cousins; one sister, Mrs. William Benson of San Jose, N.M.; two brothers, Lawrence of San Francisco and Willie Priest of Arkansas.
The funeral will be Monday at 10:30 am in the Shaftsbury Methodist Church with the Rev. A.J. MacDonald, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in South Shaftsbury Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.
