Ali grew up in the North Carolina cities of Davidson and Charlotte. She attended the Women's College of North Carolina, Greensboro (now known as UNC Greensboro) and graduated from Winthrop College in Rock Hill in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Alice also received a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1982. She was a past member of the American Bar Association, the S.C. Bar Association and the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.
Early in her career she worked as a Real Estate Agent and soon became a Broker, earning the highest grade ever made on the Broker's Exam with an almost perfect score! She and her husband, W. Manning Harris, were one of the earliest developers of property on Lake Murray, bringing over a dozen developments to market including all of the Blacksgate subdivisions, Mark I, Harbor House, Arlington Way, and Bedford Way to name a few. They also developed numerous properties on Lake Greenwood, S.C. and Lake Wylie, N.C.
In addition to being a shrewd business woman, she was also a very accomplished artist, painter, seamstress, architectural and interior designer and contractor. She was a genius at turning junk into jewels! Alice was very talented at being able to see the beauty in just about anything.
Alice P. Harris was the ultimate modern Southern woman. A fiery redhead born before the Women's Liberation Movement, she was way ahead of her time. She was very independent and assertive with an energetic, positive attitude that was hard to deny. Her adorable personality combined with her high standards made her irresistible on a personal and business level. She was able to recognize, utilize, and maximize her talents.
Alice was a past member of Kathwood Baptist Church and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. An open viewing will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the Greenlawn Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel located at 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia. A memorial service will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the same location. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
