Green-Wood Cemetery

An impressive family monument, inscribed only with the name MAUDER, stands behind 4 unique footstones inscribed “Husband,” “Son,” “John,” and “Annie.” But it’s all misleading. Herman Mauder (“Husband”) died in 1913. His widow, Annie (“Annie”), became the wife of John F. Stork (“John”) Sep 22 1918. Stork was the son of Herman Mauder’s sister, Mary. But who is “Son?” The only MAUDER here is Herman. The only STORKs are Annie and John. It’s possible that the footstone was meant for a son who eventually chose to be buried elsewhere. The only other surname here is PRESCOTT. There are 3—2 male infants and a 6-year-old boy, all of whom were moved here from Cemetery of the Evergreens, east of Green-Wood, on the same day—Apr 4 1908, while Herman Mauder was still living. Presumably, then, “Son” might be one of the 3 PRESCOTTs, meaning that Herman Mauder was Annie’s second husband. This is only speculation, but is supported by the fact that Herman and Annie were married in 1900, when Herman was 44 and Annie 30.
