Birth: Aug. 13, 1925
Middlesex County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Dec. 12, 1950
Hamgyong-namdo, North Korea

I have recently received records from the Army Casualty Branch that is doing research on MIA from Korea indicating that Herbie may have been taken as a POW, most likely by the Chinese. I have requested information from that Branch in the form of a debriefing of one of his unit members who, supposedly, had contact with him as a fellow POW and who returned to the US after the conflict. There may have also been unidentified remains returned with identified remains of fellow POWs who had died in enemy hands. This information may lead to my Uncle being repatriated during my lifetime.

I have attended several of the monthly & an annual briefing (in DC) put on by the Dept of Defense. These people are doing a great job in trying to find the missing, but in Herbie's case and many others, I have come to the realization that unless his remains have already been recovered and are waiting to be identified or the US comes to some kind of resolution with the North Koreans or they wake up and overthrow their regime, we're not going to be able to get back to N.K. to continue the searches. Hopefully someone in my family will pick up the search after I have died.

Herbie first served from 1944-1946 was a veteran of WW II and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He re-enlisted for the Korean Conflict and served with Mike (M) Company, 3d Bn, 31st Regimental Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division as a Heavy Weapons Crewman, was reported Missing In Action (MIA) 12 December 1950 in the area of the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea and presumed Killed In Action (KIA) on 31 December 1953.

Brother of Freddy Jr, Lulu (Prentice) Paschal, Charles Prentice & Sarah (Prentice) Mullin and son of Frederick & Grace (Grindle) Prentice. His remains have, to date, not been recovered but his name is listed in the Punch-bowl Cemetery in Honolulu as well as a Korean War Memorial in Dayton, Ohio. I never got to meet him!
