MRS. H. C. HANCOCK
The grim reaper took another of Russell's worthy residents last week with the death of Mrs. Gertrude Hancock, which occured on Monday night about 11:30 o'clock.
Mrs. Hancock had been very poorly for some time and the last few weeks had declined rapidly. All of her children were at her bedside when death came with the exception of one son, Leslie, of Helena, Montana.
Funeral services were held from the Russell Methodist church, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. I. C. Thom. Interment was made in the Russell cemetery. The following obituary was read at the service:
Mary Gertrude Prather, only daughter of Martin and Anna A. Prather, was born April 22, 1859, at LaGrange, Iowa, and departed this life at her home in Russell, Iowa, March 24, 1930, aged 70 years, 11 months and 2 days.
At an early age she united with the Methodist church at Greenville, and lived a loyal, consistent christian life, taking an active part in all the departments of the church and was a liberal supporter of the same.
On February 12, 1879, she was united in marriage to Henry Clay Hancock, who died February 9, 1923. To this union were born eight children: Elbert A., of Russell; Leslie L., of Helena, Montana; Hoyt, who died in infancy; J. Homer, of Ballantine, Montana; Adelbert A., of Cody, Wyoming; Viola E. Lewis, of Emporia, Kansas; Anna. L., who died November 2, 1906; and Ione B. Kells, of Elk Basin, Wyoming.
She also leaves to mourn their loss ten grandchildren, one great grandchild and three half-brothers.
Although she has passed from this life, she will continue to live in the tender memories of her loved ones as a loving and self-sacrificing friend and neighbor, ever willing to help in time of need. Her children will ever cherish her memory with great satisfaction and comfort, for the more they think of her, the more will her gracious unselfishness be to them a comfort and inspiration.
