MRS. MATILDA ELIZABETH BOWMAN

Matilda Elizabeth Prather, daughter of John and Sarah Prather, was born November 29, 1852, and passed away at the Yocom hospital in Chariton, Iowa, on January 18, 1940. Her age at the time of her death was 87 years, 1 month and 19 days.

She was born in Monroe county, Iowa, where her parents entered land and where she endured the many hardships common to the early pioneers.

She was united in marriage to Perry Bowman on May 22, 1877. To this union were born five children, two of whom preceded her in death, Ruth Mamie, who died at the age of two years and Emery Nelson Bowman, who passed on at the age of 47.

The children who survive her are Guy Leslie Bowman of Chariton, Delbert Jay Bowman of Derby, and Grace Edith, now Mrs. Herman Threlkeld of Chariton. Five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also are living.

After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bowman continued to reside on the farm in Monroe coutny until the year 1902, at which time she moved to a farm near Chariton where she spent several years in establishing a home for her sons and reared two grandchildren.

Some years later she took up residence in a home on South 7th street in Chariton where she lived until being removed to the home of her daughter, where she spent the last 5 years of her life.

She united with the Methodist church when a small child and attended services regularly until her health failed.

Thus ends the life of service for others and even in her last illness, through great pain, she maintained her smile and her spirit of patience and perseverance.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Chariton, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Paul H. HIcks, and interment was in the Chariton cemetery.
