Dorothy Jean Irene Horton Poynter, 85, of Greenwood, died Saturday, June 28, 2014.

She was born Feb. 10, 1929, in Trimble County, Ky., to Hobart and Amy Chandler Horton. She worked as a waitress for more than 30 years, retiring at age 52. She enjoyed animals, especially bird watching. She was a lifelong Baptist and enjoyed studying the Bible.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Poynter and Jess Lee Poynter Jr.; three daughters, Sherry Bear, Carrie Knight and Ramona Jackson; two brothers, Ben Horton and Charles Horton; one sister, Jodi Richmond; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Lee Poynter, Sr., whom she married Aug 12, 1954; one son, Todd Poynter; her parents; one brother, Doug Horton; and three sisters, Evelyn Horton, Audrey Cannon and Nellie Wallace.

A memorial visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St., Greenwood.
