CLEVELAND, Va. ? Thelma Marie Tiller Powers, affectionately known as "Granny," answered our Master's call on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, in the Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon. She was surrounded by her family as she quietly slipped away from this earthly life into the arms of Jesus. Amid the sadness there is a sense of triumph and glory in the victory she has won.
She was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Russell County to Clovis Herbert Tiller and Ida Beatrice Wolford Tiller. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mancel Charles Powers; brothers, Fred and Howard Tiller; and sister, Virginia Dare Schaffer.
She is survived by two sons, Herman Powers and wife Catherine, Hampton, Va., and Donald (Duck) Powers and wife Norma Jean, Trammel, Va.; one daughter, Susan Edmonds and husband Charles, Cleveland, Va.; two grandsons, Bobby Jessee and wife Melanie, Bristol Virginia, and Donald Lewis (Winky) Powers and wife Debra, Trammel; and four great-grandchildren, Eric and Mancel Powers and Bryce and Beth Jessee. Also surviving are a sister, Mabel Ramey, Lebanon; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Powers was of the Baptist faith, having invited Jesus into her heart when she was just a young woman.
The family will receive friends 6 until 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at Combs Funeral Service. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood.
Pallbearers will be Haze Clark Jr., William T. Fuller Jr., Dwight Powers, Mike Powers, Terry Powers and Carl Robinson Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Dwight Bailey, Holland Robert Jessee Jr. and Joe Mays.
Those wishing to make memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may do so to Alzheimer's research or to the charity of your choice.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Dwight Bailey and the entire third floor nursing staff of the Russell County Medical Center for the care and compassion shown to Mrs. Powers and her family during her illness. They also wish to thank the staff, especially Rhonda, of Mountain View ACR, Lebanon.
