Walter Leroy "Sonny" Power, Jr., died peacefully on May 3, 2012 in Arlington, VA. A native of St. Augustine, FL, Sonny was born on August 10, 1932, the son of Walter Leroy "Roy" Power and Ruth Garrison Power. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Faye Power of Arlington, VA; two sons: Walter Leroy "Sean" Power, III of Fairhope, AL and Glenn Arthur Power of St. Augustine: four granddaughters, Stephanie Bednarek, Jennifer and Catherine Power, and Althea Fitzpow; and, one grandson, Cyrus Fitzpow. He is also survived by his brother, Donald E. Power of St. Augustine. He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Eugenia "Jennie" Senides Power.

Sonny grew up on Anastasia Island living in the shadow of the lighthouse and close to the ocean he loved. He attended Cathedral Parish School and Ketterlinus High School (Class of 1951). A Korean War Veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served as an Aviation Electronics Technician. His interest in electronics led him to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL and then to work in the Electrical Engineering Department there for 20 years. He also worked in the Electrical Engineering Departments at both Auburn University in Alabama and Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Sonny was well known as a photographer. Along with work at many weddings and other events, he taught classes in photography several years in Gainesville through the Santa Fe Community College Adult Education Program. All who heard him sing, especially "O Holy Night" at Christmas, lovingly remember his beautiful Irish-tenor voice. Sonny loved reading, old movies, aircraft, ships, lighthouses, woodworking, fishing, riding and working on motorcycles, and fixing anything whether it needed it or not. He restored old radios, stereos, and televisions and was an avid ham radio operator for many years. He gave of his time and talents whenever asked and had a soft spot for animals of every kind. More often than not one stray dog or another found a home with his family, and was then always at his side or in his lap. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and always thrilled to hear details of their lives and adventures.

From 1993 until his death, Sonny lived with his daughter in Arlington, VA often building or repairing things around the house, at church, or at the neighborhood schools. As his health and eyesight failed and kept him from his books and minute electrical repairs, he continued to help as he could, or teach someone else how to do it.

Friends and family are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine on July 23, 2012 at 9:00am. Interment will follow at San Lorenzo Cemetery. All are asked to join his family after the graveside services to share memories and celebrate his life. Condolences and memories may be sent by e-mail to [email protected].
