Virginia M. Powell Ashcraft, 80, of Collison, passed away at 1 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 21, 2002) at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, Sager campus.
Virginia was born Dec. 24, 1921, near Potomac, the daughter of the late Fred and Stella (Stump) Powell. Virginia married Harry R. Ashcraft on July 27, 1944. He preceded her in death on March 11, 2001. Three brothers and three sisters and two special nieces also preceded her in death.
Survivors include son, Donald (Pamela) Ashcraft of Monticello; a daughter, Gloria J. Osterbur Childers of Collison; four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Gina) Osterbur, Tricia Osterbur, Heidi Ashcraft Horatschki, and Hannah Ashcraft and eight great-grandchildren.
Virginia graduated from Potomac High School, St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Danville and Eastern Illinois University. Virginia was a registered nurse in medical and surgical nursing with a affiliation in public health. The last 25 years of her nursing career were spent in school nurse education of Oakwood School District 76.
She introduced and shared the first required guidelines of the School Nurse Program as it occured then in rural area schools of Vermilion County. Her emphasis remained as always in preventative care and using the wisdom that God gave us in the field and classroom.
Virginia was a member of Collison United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Nurses Alumni Association.
Funeral services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Collison United Methodist Church; Officiating: the Rev. Allen Miller; Burial: Collison Cemetery. A luncheon will be served by the Collison United Methodist Women following the graveside service. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Monday at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center. Memorials may be made to the Collison United Methodist Church or the Oakwood Public Library for Children's Education.
