William Powell was born on December 5, 1835 to Mary Moreland and Robert M Powell III in Bloomery, Hampshire County, Virginia (West Virginia). He lived in Bloomery his entire life. He was sixth born of eleven children; six boys and five girls. He also had a twin brother. William can trace his earliest American ancestor to his 3rd Great Grandfather William Powell (?-1715) of Maryland. he also had military history in his family. His Great Grandfather Elisha Powell (1739-1796) was an enlisted patriot (December 15,1777) and Lieutenant in Colonel Timothy Bedel’s Regiment of Rangers. William grew up on his father’s farm until 1858 when his father died. William, his siblings, and mother then went to live on the farm of George Holt.
-
William, at age 26, enlisted on April 8, 1862 with Company A “Potomac Guards”, 33rd Virginia Infantry. The 33rd was assigned to the “Stonewall” Brigade. On April 23, 1862, William was elected 1st Lieutenant. They were at McDowell, Front Royal, fought at First Winchester, Port Republic, the Seven Days (Gaines’ Mill, Malvern Hill), and Harrison’s Landing. On August 2, 1862 he was reported as sick in camp before being sent to CSA General Hospital at Charlottesville, Virginia. He remained there until September 22, 1862. He was delayed in returning to the 33rd and was record as Absent Without Leave. William was then at Fredericksburg but did not fight. On February 1, 1863, William was promoted to Captain of Company A. He then fought at Chancellorsville. On May 9, he was sent to General Hospital No. 4 at Richmond, Virginia due to Chronic Diarrhea. He returned in early June 1863 and fought at Second Winchester and Gettysburg. The 33rd did not arrive at Gettysburg until late in the evening of July 1 and was placed on picket duty on the Hanover Road about a mile east of town on July 2. In the early morning of July 3, the 33rd was at last brought into the fight for Culp’s Hill. During the second attack, William was wounded and taken prisoner. William was later exchanged on February 25, 1865 but was placed in sick care at Camp Ewell (near Burgess Mill). It is unclear if he returned to fighting duty or resigned. Either way his records end here.
-
William returned from war and continued to work on the Holt farm. On March 31, 1870, at age 34, he married the 24-year-old, Bloomery native Mary Ellen Pugh. The never had any children. He then settled his own farm, worked as a miller throughout the 1870s, and as a sheriff through the late 1890s. William Powell died on January 9, 1918 at the age of 82. He is buried at United Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery at Forks of Cacapon, Hampshire County, West Virginia. He lies next to his wife who died in 1917.
